As of late 2025, the conversation around Windows 11 activation has evolved significantly, particularly with the approach of the Windows 10 End of Support (October 2025).
Official blogs from Microsoft and tech community guides highlight three main paths for activation:
1. Official & Recommended Methods
Microsoft heavily promotes "Digital Licenses" which are linked to your Microsoft Account.
The Hardware Link: In 2025, Windows 11 uses a digital footprint of your hardware. If you upgrade from an activated Windows 10, your Windows 11 should activate automatically the moment you sign in.
Activation Troubleshooter: If you've changed hardware (like a motherboard), the official Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot path is the most reliable way to transfer your license.
Phone Activation: A "classic" but still active method for 2025. By running
slui 4in the Run dialog, you can activate via an automated Microsoft phone system if internet activation fails.
2. The "Generic Key" Approach (For Testing)
If you are installing Windows 11 for evaluation, Microsoft provides Generic Product Keys. These allow you to complete the installation and use the OS for a limited time (30–90 days), but they do not provide a permanent license.
